Peer To Peer Boat Rental

How Boat Sharing Works

Renting my boat on Boatsetter – Long Term Rental with $$ breakdown

Any boat owner can list his or her boat on a number of peer-to-peer sharing platforms that specialize in boats. The service takes a cut of the rental fee, and in exchange the parties involved can get third-party peer-to-peer boat rental insurance, safety and security checks, a secure payment system, and the ability to review ratings.

As a renter, you can search through the database by location or by type of boat and pick out any size or style you likesome of these services have tens of thousands of different boats available across the nation and even internationallyand learn about them before you ever step aboard. Then you connect with the owner to make sure youre comfortable with each other, find out what sort of gear is aboard the boat and included in the rental, and other details. In many cases, you can also choose to hire a professional captain if youd like. Then you book your date, and hit the water.

Age Requirements to Rent

Minimum ages depend to some degree on state laws where youll be boating but as a rule of thumb, in most places youll need to be at least 18 and most peer-to-peer platforms also facilitate rentals to legal adults, only. In some cases, age requirements may change if you hire a professional captain and wont be running the boat yourself.

Are There Special Circumstances Where I Might Not Be Covered

The BoatUS Peer-to-Peer Boat Rental Policy doesnt cover damage in a named tropical storm. In Florida, if you own the boat, the P2P policy is cancelled as soon as a storm is named.

The policies also dont cover navigating at night, racing , and commercial uses like towing or nonrecreational fishing.

The Fort Lauderdale-based company is still the market leader for boat rental platforms, and they show no signs of slowing down, either. In the last calendar year alone Boatsetter has grown 350%. Were continuing to reinforce our dominance in the US market, and weve just raised new capital last year to accelerate us into 2020, Jaclyn Baumgarten, co-founder and CEO of Boatsetter explains. Demand from renters is pouring in as we continually bring new boaters into the lifestyle with over 55% of our renters being under the age of 35, and our top boat owners are having record years. We have more than 30 full-time employees, swelling to a full 45 during peak boating season, when it takes on staff at an outpost in Ibiza. To date, the company has raised more than $27 million, a sum still larger than any of our competitors have raised.

Will It Be Cheaper To Do Peer To Peer Boat Rental In The Long Run It Depends

We spoke with Click& Boat, a France based peer to peer boat rental company, to understand how much p2p rentals cost, and then compared these costs with the costs we experienced owning a boat. What we discovered was that renting can be FAR more economical than ownership but it really depends on a few factors. So, here are the 5 factors to consider when deciding whether you to buy or rent a boat.

How Much Liability Insurance Do I Need

The BoatUS Peer-to-Peer Boat Rental Policy provides up to $300,000 in liability coverage, which is comparable to most recreational policies. With recreational policies, the majority of people carry a $300,000 limit, said Pellerin. However, depending on your risk tolerance, you may want to buy supplemental insurance.

Pellerin suggests that high-net-worth owners may want to ask how much liability coverage the P2P policy is providing and then check with their homeowners or umbrella insurance to see if there are any additional limits available.

Worst Communication From A Company Ive Ever Seen

I’ve literally never posted a negative review online before, but communicating with this company sucked so much that I had to say something. Was super excited when I first found out about them, but they’re very fast and loose with last minute cancellations – and either don’t bother telling you or just forget altogether. My partner had a lesson that he traveled 50 minutes across the city for, only to find out when he got there that it was canceled. He texted the captain, who said he’d messaged us already, but uhh…either the captain forgot to, or just straight up lied. Neither exactly great for running a business. My partner’s way too nice so I confronted the captain about this, and he replied back solely with, “Here’s the link to reschedule!” What??? Is there even a real person behind their contact lines?Oh, and I forgot to mention that that was the 4TH TIME we rescheduled – the others because, as you guessed, they cancelled last minute. And honestly, I don’t even mind that part much – I get it, bad weather happens, boats break down, etc. But they rarely respond to emails , and also being so sloppy/negligent that you don’t even tell people when sessions ARE cancelled is such a bad look for a company. So over them, such a frustrating experience.

What Is Your Skill Level And What Do You Want To Learn

Enjoy peer-to-peer boating with Boatsetter

In many cases a peer to peer boat rental includes a captain who will ensure you have a safe, relaxed, and fun experience, they may even be willing to share some expertise and teach you how to sail. If something happens youve got someone on board who can take care of it. You also have the freedom to take a break and relax aboard while someone else steers. According to Click& Boat, sailing with a skipper would typically cost you an extra 120 150 per day.

On the other hand, owning a boat will teach you skills that you cant learn anywhere else. So if learning about diesel engines, DC electrical, sail repair, self-sufficiency appeals to you or if you think you might like to go offshore cruising one day, owning a boat is the only way to get those skills.

Best Boating Peer To Peer

Boatsetter is the only boating platform I trust. Other companies are not fully protecting the renter during the booking. Knowing I have insurance coverage for liabilities while I am on the boat during the rental period makes the day less stressful. I also like how they roll the full price into the total including the captain. When I book a captained boat, it’s nice to know up front the cost, even though I will be paying the captain seperately at the dock. I can’t wait to get back out on the water!! Yay for using other people’s boats!

Do Your Clients Need Peer

Most people are familiar with short-term rental services like Airbnb, which allows strangers to rent a home or apartment. Did you know there are also platforms to allow for short-term rentals of boats? These rental services are called peer-to-peer or P2P rentals. Boat owners who wish to make extra cash may want to rent their boats for the day or week. Unfortunately, not all boat owners insurance policies cover damage or loss of a vessel if it has been rented to another operator. Your boat owning clients need personal watercraft rental insurance to help cover any risk exposures in the P2P environment. Here is a guide to help your clients determine whether they need peer-to-peer insurance and the benefits of obtaining a comprehensive policy.

The ocean made accessible thanks to peer to peer rental

Just like TIMEZERO, renting boats is aimed at both recreational and professional sailors, so no one is excluded. The sailing rental industry has seen a boom since the arrival of peer to peer boat rental. Not having to pass through the traditional channels has meant that the prices have become more accessible and more people are able to rent.

Sharing is caring & profitable

More boats in more locations means more people able to sail. By having a system where one can search by closest destination, renters can find a solution that is more fitted to their exact needs.

TIMEZERO users that are boat owners can become part of the sharing economy, providing others with the joy of sailing while increasing their own personal income. The renter can even decide whether they want to stay on-board as the Skipper meaning that he can both turn his passion into a job and also allow those without a sailing license the chance to experience the sailing lifestyle. What Does It Cost To Own A Boat

This will vary depending on a variety of factors such as the age of the boat and whether you have a trailerable boat or perhaps a cheap mooring buoy and can avoid moorage costs . However, using a base example of a 30ft sailboat, lets say the marina fees are on average $4,000/year and that maintenance equates roughly to $2,000/year. So we can say that a 30ft sailboat would cost you $6,000/year before depreciation and without paying anyone for maintenance. If you are doing your own maintenance, theres also the cost of your time spent

Where Can I Go

Make sure you understand where you can take the boat, said Pellerin. With Boatsetter you can go up to 12 miles from the coast, and you must stay in U.S. waters. So if youre in Southern California, youve got to pay attention and make sure youre not getting into Mexican waters or going to Catalina. Use a GPS so youll know where you are at all times. You may not be covered if you stray too far.

What Does Peer To Peer Boat Rental Cost

According to our friends at Click& Boat, prices can start out pretty low on a day to day basis. For example, a 15ft motorboat could cost you on average 80 per day. For a 30ft sailboat prices average out at around 150 per day. Whereas if you are looking at something a little more luxurious you can expect to pay around 600 per day for a 40ft catamaran, or if you want to really splash out, as much as 1500 for a 60 ft long catamaran. In many cases the owner will ask for a security deposit which again, depending on the type and size of the boat can start of from a couple of hundred euros up to 3000 , and ensuring you return the boat in the same condition, you will get your deposit back.

Boats listed on boat rental by owner sites are insured by the boat owners themselves but often there are additional insurance policies available should you want to cover sudden cancellations, extra assistance or towing. The pricing varies greatly depending on the type of boat, the duration and the location.

Almost all recreational boat insurance policies prohibit rentals, which leaves boat owners with two other options. The first is through a platform like Boatsetter that provides P2P insurance. Many platforms, however, do not offer insurance or recommend insurance providers.

Essentially the only other option, Pellerin said, is to get a charter policy that allows for bareboat charters. Otherwise you and your renter may not be covered at all. These types of policies are typically more expensive and harder to find.

What Is Peer To Peer Yacht Charter

The arrival of peer to peer boat charter sites has provided a way to connect boat owners with those who want to set sail, via a secure platform. Sailing newbies, pros or even those who just fancy lazing around on a yacht for the day are able to rent affordable boating experiences.

One such site is, with more than 20,000 privately owned yachts available for hire across Europe. Boat owners create a listing for their boat, write a description and set a price. Users simply have to enter their search criteria, browse the boats available to them and then make a request to the boat owner.

Depending on their needs, charterers are able to choose from small motorboats to large luxury yachts, for a couple of hours to a couple of weeks. Owners registered to these sites are covered by insurance policies and rental contracts to secure the entire process and cover their precious boats.

VS: While it varies significantly from owner-to-owner and is location-dependent as some owners are able to run charters year-round vs. a short summer boating season, some boat owners do not make a profit they only rent their boat to offset the cost of boat ownership and then enjoy it for themselves the rest of the season, while some making over 100K running their boating business full-time on GetMyBoat.

What Are The Steps For Getting Back To The Dock In Case Of Failure

Pellerin says renters should always ask, What do I do, who do I call, and how do I get back? Confirm with the owner what steps you should take in case of mechanical failure. Boatsetter provides TowBoatUS on-the-water towing service. So, should something happen, there would not be an out-of-pocket expense to get the boat back to the dock. Renters simply need to call the TowBoatUS dispatch center or local TowBoatUS port to request on-water emergency service, or use the BoatUS App to request a tow.
