In-Classroom Instruction
New York State Parks’ Bureau of Marine Services has over 55 years of experience teaching New Yorkers to operate their boats safely. In the last 15 years, through State Parks network of certified instructors, we have taught more than 300,000 people.
The in-classroom course option is designed as a comprehensive study of boating safety to teach the fundamentals of safe boating operation. The course requires a structured classroom setting and has been approved by the National Association of Boating Law Administrators .

Provide And Sign A Boat Rental Agreement
After verifying and confirming a guests boating experience and resume, provide a rental agreement. - check the required and suggested safety equipment
- make sure all equipment and items are running properly and nothing has expired
- show your renter or guest where each item is located, and
- to inform your renter, guests, and passengers how necessary items are used
If a required safety item is missing or does not work, do not allow your renter to go out. The item must be replaced or fixed before anyone takes your vessel out. If the item that is missing or does not work is a suggested safety item, you will need to assess the situation based on safety. If in doubt, dont go out.

Walk through the pre-rental checklist before the guest embarks on your vessel, and when s/he returns, go through the post-rental checklist. These checklists serve as a reminder to verify each item has been attended to, and allows you time to perform a damage check on your vessel. Have your renter go through it with you together and make sure you both have read, understood, and signed both forms.

Just because it is unlikely that your pontoon will flip or capsize, doesnt mean that it is impossible.

It is illegal to operate a vessel in Ontario while consuming alcohol. While underway, open alcohol cannot be transported on any type of boat in Ontario. Alcohol may only be consumed on board vessels equipped with a galley , head and sleeping quarters, and only consumed while at anchor. The fines and penalties for operating a boat under the influence of alcohol in Ontario are the same as those for operating a motorized vehicle.

New York State Adventure License
If you have a lifetime recreation certificate or sporting license, your New York State Driver License can now become an all-purpose boating, fishing, hunting and parks ID card.
Anyone successfully completing the New York Safe Boating Course or approved online boating safety course may opt to have their driver’s license, non-driver ID, or learner’s permit indicate completion of the course. A small anchor icon will be placed on your DMV document, attesting that you have earned a New York State boating safety certificate.
The advantage to this program is that you will no longer need to carry your boating safety certificate with you when boating, provided you have your DMV credential with you. DMV will maintain a record of your having completed the boating safety course, and automatically place the icon on your license each time it is renewed.

How To Keep Boat Engine From Freezing
If you know the temperature is going to be below 32 degrees Fahrenheit overnight, one thing you could do late in the evening is run the engine to temperature, then close the engine cover. Doing this should help keep the engine warm enough to last several hours.
Another thing that is suggested is that you use an anti-freeze that is specific for Marine use only. Marine anti-freeze is a propylene glycol based product, where the stuff used in cars is an alcohol or ethyl alcohol based product.
Ethyl alcohol-based products are corrosive, especially to rubbers, which will eat away at your rubber hoses, seals and gaskets.
Propylene glycol will lubricate and coat the inside of your engine and hoses to prevent them from any corrosion over the winter. Marine anti-freeze is good for up to -50 degrees Fahrenheit.
If you choose not to use an anti-freeze, you must make sure that you have fully drained any remaining water thats been left inside the engine and lines. When water freezes, it will begin to expand which is what causes the engine to crack and lines to burst.
