It’s located at the north end of the lake on the city pier and less than 30 minutes from most suburbs of Rochester. Freedom Boat Club Canandaigua offers one of the easiest ways to enjoy boating. When you arrive you are greeted by FBC dock staff who help you load your gear on your selected boat. When you return, FBC Dock staff will help you tie up, check you in and you are on your way to your next activity. With Freedom Boat Club, 100% of your time is spent enjoying the water. You don’t have any of the hassles of owning a boat like paying for depreciation, insurance and docking fees, or dealing with maintenance and winter storage.

Hassle-free boating. Thatâs what the Freedom Boat Club offers. Two Bennington pontoon boats, a Hurricane deck boat and a Key West bow rider are available. Theyâre equipped to tow. Members also have access to over 100 Freedom Boat Clubs and 1,000 boats nationwide.

âWeâre heading into our first season,â says Matt OâHara, who co-owns the franchise with his wife Rebecca. âMy wife grew up boating on Lake George, her grandma still lives on the lake and we were married on Lake George. Our goal is to provide a way for more people to get out on Lake George. Weâre hoping to attract people who are new to boating and people who have owned boats. One of the biggest values we can provide is giving you your time back you maximize your time on the water instead of spending it on the dock. Weâll also sponsor social events for members throughout the year. For example, our partnership with Saratoga Polo will provide access for our members.â

Members benefit from completing eight hours of on- and off-water training. Thereâs an initiation fee and monthly dues. Annual memberships range from $2,500 to $3,600. âMany times, it would cost more than that for a slip alone,â OâHara says.

Matt OHara owns and operates Freedom Boat Club located at Queen Boat Co. on Lake George, New York, in the Adirondack region of the state, about 200 miles from New York City. As David Gee finds out in this edition of Boating Industry Insider, OHara didnt aspire to be a boating business owner. In fact, he didnt even grow up boating. He was introduced to Lake George, the “Queen of the American Lakes,” with its 109 miles of shoreline and 300+ islands, through his wife Rebecca. And he learned about Freedom Boat Club when they became a client while he was working in advertising sales in Boston. Matt and Rebecca OHara, who for the past three years have operated a Freedom Boat Club franchise at Beckleys boats at Diamond Point on Lake George, now are buying their own marina, Dunhams Bay, on the southeast shore.

Karen Howard, who has operated Dunhams Bay since 1972, told The Chronicle that the sale closing is set for Thursday, Oct. 11. The price was not disclosed.

Im very happy with the couple who are buying it, Mrs. Howard said. Im excited about what his business can bring to Lake George. I think Im going to be one of Matts customers.

She said shell sell her house in Queensbury, buy a condominium in Naples, Florida, and spend four months up here.

Mr. OHara, a graduate of Boston College, and his wife Rebecca, of graduate of the University of Rochester and then Babson College with a business degree, three years ago moved to Saratoga and opened the 100th Freedom Boat Club franchise.

Mrs. OHara told The Chronicle in 2016, Lake George is my happy place. My grandfather bought land here in 1941. To come up here to start this business is a dream come true.

Mr. OHara said then, Shes been basically on Lake George since she was born. I kind of married into Lake George.

Peter Coons wants to get as many people as possible out and enjoying the water.

âIt’s a beautiful day. I mean what is better than this,” said Coons while driving an $80,000 center console fishing boat on the Freedom Boat Club fleet.

He sells and rents boats at his marina, Seager Marine in Canandaigua. He also owns two Freedom Boat Club franchise locations, one in Canandaiguaand a new second location at the Port of Rochester.

âFreedom BC is not just in Canandaigua and the Port of Rochester, there are locations in Lake George, Buffalo, Toronto and in France and in the UK,” said Coons. “Once you become a member of the club you can go to any of those clubs. You have reciprocal rights to those clubs.”

Freedom Boat Club Starts $14m Overhaul Part Of Many Lakeside Marina Activities

The owners of Freedom Boat Club on Lake George have started a $1.24 million overhaul of the marina.

Matt OHara, one of the owners, said renovations will include a rooftop deck, an elevator, a new building facade and a members lounge.

His plans for the marina itself focus on growing the service department. He is also upgrading the wastewater system.

Phinney Design Group of Saratoga Springs did the design work for the project and BBL Construction Services of Albany is supervising the work. OHara expects the project to be completed by next fall.

It is part of a myriad of activities on Lake George regarding marinas.

The estate of John Salvador Jr. has sold Dunhams Bay Boat & Beach Club on the southeast part of the lake for approximately $1.1 million, according to deeds that were filed in March in Warren County.

Two Florida holding companies managed by wealth management adviser Michael Chrys purchased the 9.2-acre marina on Lake George. The purchases were made under the names Mirada 7 LLC and Garner Holdings II LLC, according to the deeds.

Also, Shoreline Boat Sales & Services on Lake George is expanding again with the purchase of two properties on Canada Street in the heart of the resort community, according to deeds filed ion Warren County, also in March.

OHara sees a strong future in sustainable, emission-free boating.

A lot of people are really thinking about the environment, he said.

Freedom Boat Club Partners With Ny Childrens Museum

Freedom Boat Club Lake George said it partnered with the Childrens Museum at Saratoga in New York on a new boating and fishing exhibit.

Saratoga Lake Lets Go Boating is an interactive, immersive exhibit, helping youth utilize play as a means to enhance development.

The exhibit, which includes a life jacket station donated by BoatUS, will offer children an opportunity to take an imagination-fueled boat ride and discover plants and animals in their natural habitats. Additional interactive components are being constructed for visitors to engage as they discover life on the lake, according to FBC Lake George.

We are frequent visitors of the museum with our 4- and 2-year-old daughters, and after weve seen their joy interacting with the steering wheels and controls on our club boats, we thought it would be a great addition to enhance the interactivity of the boat exhibit at the museum,said FBC Lake George co-owner Rebecca OHara.

The exhibits grand opening is April 13 at 10:30 a.m.

We strongly believe that time spent boating as a family is among the best quality time we have with our kids and want to continue making boating more accessible in the area, said Matt OHara.

Freedom Boat Club Partners With Childrens Museum With Interactive Boating Exhibit

Freedom Boat Club Lake George has partnered with the Childrens Museum at Saratoga on a boating and fishing exhibit.

The Saratoga LakeLets Go Boating exhibit is an interactive, kid-friendly, and colorfully immersive exhibit. The exhibit helps young children utilize play to enhance their social and emotional development, as well as learn how to communicate, observe and problem solve with one another as they navigate their way through it, museum officials said.

Freedom Boat Club owners Matt and Rebecca OHara have been members of the museum for several years and brought the idea to staff last year.

We are frequent visitors of the museum with our 5- and 3 year-old daughters. Weve seen the joy they get interacting with the steering wheels and controls on our club boats, we thought it would be great to enhance the interactivity of the boat exhibit at the museum, said Rebecca. We were thrilled when Sarah and her museum team were open to the idea of working with us to add not just the controls to the boat, but significantly upgrading the space with the fishing and knot tying panels.

The exhibit space is on the first floor of the museum. It offers children an opportunity to take a boat ride fueled by their imagination as they discover different animals and plants in their natural habitat. To further enhance the exhibits educational value, there are additional interactives for visitors to engage with as they discover life on the lake.
