What Is A Boat Club

A boat club is a private business that owns a fleet of boats. They allow boaters of varying skill levels to join their club and then offer them the use of their boats for a certain fee and under certain rules.

For the majority of members, a boat club is an alternative means of enjoying boating without having to own a boat themselves. Before considering whether you should join a boat club, it’s important to understand how they work.

Monthly Freedom Boat Club Membership Cost

The prices for monthly dues also vary in terms of the Freedom Boat Clubs membership plans. As previously mentioned, the location of the Freedom Boat Club marina impacts the overall monthly fees associated with its membership.

For example, clubs that are located in warm climates tend to run all year-round, which makes the monthly dues more expensive. These locations need to hire staff to work year-round and spend money on the maintenance and operations of the boats.

However, in colder climates, the boating clubs tend to operate less frequently and mostly work during the warmer months. As such, monthly dues and other fees are less expensive in colder regions of the country.

Generally, monthly membership plans for the Freedom Boat Club can cost as much as $349. As such, the cost to join Freedom Boat Club can be as high as $9,188 per year when including the one-time initiation fee.

How Much Does Freedom Boat Club Cost

How much does it cost to belong to Freedom Boat Club? Its typically the first question I get from someone who is considering joining.

There are various elements that determine the fees. There is not a cookie-cutter, standardized pricing that it applicable coast to coast. Membership fees vary from club to club, just as some fitness clubs charge $70 a month while others $15 a month. Location, amenities, and other factors all play a role in determining fees.

Every member of Freedom Boat Club, and there are 15,000 across the nation, pay a one-time fee to join, and then a monthly fee. It is to be expected that a Freedom Boat Club franchise operating from a five-star marina would have significantly higher expenses than one based in a more modest marina.

Please keep in mind that many of the franchises and corporate clubs occasionally offer promotions and incentives during the year, so be sure to ask if special offers are available.

Monthly Membership Plans

These fees also vary across the country for the reasons cited above.

Many of our clubs are located in warm climates and operate year round with unlimited boating. This requires year-round staffing and maintenance of the fleet.

Thats why when someone asks, What does it cost to join Freedom Boat Club, the answer is: It depends.

How Does It Work

Bryan Lee, director of operations at Freedom Boat Club at Thurmond Lake and Lake Hartwell, said the club is basically an alternative to boat ownership. The club owns the boats, insures them, maintains them, stores them and keeps them clean for members to use.

Its a private membership. You pay a one-time fee to get in and then you make monthly dues. Other than that, you pay for the fuel that you use, he said.

The one-time fee ranges in the $4,000 to $5,000 range with the monthly fee in the $350 range depending on the plan. Lee said its still cheaper than owning a boat and you dont have to worry about transporting a boat or maintenance.

The cost is about a third of what it is for boat ownership, thats not including if you have a fancy truck or car to tow your boat with, Lee said. We put brand new boats in our fleet very regularly, so you are not stuck with the same boat. We have multiple different kind of boats.

Why Augusta?

Lee said they decided to open the club at Thurmond Lake after success at Lake Hartwell and because they own Clarks Hill Marina, so they decided to open their second franchise in the area. They hope the group here continues to grow.

This year, there is a big boat inventory issue. Manufacturers are not able to keep up with a lot of deliveries. Freedom Boat Club is a great alternative, where you dont have all that hassle of owning a boat, Lee said.

What To Ask Before Joining A Boat Club

There are some things you need to know before you decide which club to join.

Some questions to ask include:

  • What all does my fee include?
  • Do I need additional insurance or boating insurance?
  • Will I need to get a boating license?
  • What is involved in your training and safety programs?
  • Will I be expected to volunteer at the club?
  • Do you have family activities for children?
  • What are the regulations on gas refills for the boats?
  • What are the rules for turning in the boats at the end of the day?

Getting all the answers upfront will make a big difference in where you decide to drop anchor.

One key factor is finding out if you can bring guests or children out on the boat. You also need to find out what insurance is required to bring others on a boat.

Be sure to read membership agreements carefully, especially when it comes to additional fees or liability.

You will also want to ask about their maintenance policies on their boats. Most clubs are great at maintaining their fleet, but you should know how often routine maintenance is done and what type of performance to expect. Also, ask about procedures if the boat has mechanical issues on the water.

It is important to know who to call for a tow back to shore.

One of the most important factors is whether you like those in the club. It is a good idea, if possible, to attend a couple of social functions to see if you enjoy being around other members before you decide to join the club.
