Where To Install Boat Registration Numbers

How To Apply Boat Registration Numbers

How to install boat registration numbers and names

While regulations in most states merely require that the numbers be affixed permanently, in most cases people will use one of two methods to apply boat registration numbers: stick-on vinyl decals, or stencils and paint.

Stick-on vinyl decals are most commonly used, since theyre available at most marine supply stores, are readily available in the minimum sizes and styles, and are easy to apply. Stick-on vinyl decals also offer excellent longevity and dont often come free from the boat as long as theyre applied on a clean, dry fiberglass surface.

Stencils are also effective, although few people want to apply paint to a fiberglass boatespecially in states which dont transfer registration numbers between owners. There are some situations, however, when they make a lot of sense.

  • In the case of inflatables, for example, vinyl stick-on numbers may not adhere well and even if they do, are subject to loss as the inflatable collar shrinks and expands.
  • Stick-ons may also be inappropriate for boats made of polyethylene as many have very slick surfaces that dont have good adhesion properties.

The prefix and suffix should be separated from the middle four numbers by spaces or hyphens, for example: UT-1234-AA. Boat registration numbers should be the only number on the forward half of the boat.

Utah boating law states that Except as provided by Section 73-18-9, the owner of each motorboat and sailboat on the waters of this state shall register it with the division as provided. Alternative Installation Of Boat Registration Stickers: The Wet Method:

You may also install these using the wet method. See our video below for details on the wet method.

  • Clean the area of the boat hull where the numbers are to be applied. Make sure all oil, grease, wax or other surface contaminants are removed. Acetone is recommended, but glass cleaner can also be used.
  • For best results, apply where both the vinyl and hull can be above 50 degrees F. At cold temperatures, the vinyl can become brittle, and the adhesive characteristics of both the vinyl and the transfer tape also change.
  • Use a horizontal rule to mark a baseline for where you will apply the vinyl. A small tick mark at the end points and every 12 is helpful. A fine point felt tip marker or sharpie is helpful.
  • Make up a spray bottle of water with a little bit of dish soap and shake . The dish soap and water help create a slick surface for the vinyl to slide on for application that can be moved around while applying.
  • Peel the PAPER backing off, exposing the sticky side of the vinyl and transfer paper
  • Spray the transfer paper and vinyl lightly with the soapy solution
  • Apply to your hull. You have a minute to adjust this because the graphics will slide on your hull with the wet method.
  • Burnish with something flat/plastic
  • Peel the transfer tape off
  • Thats it! Easy!

In one section it says that it needs hyphens between letters and numbers and in a different section they say that it needs to appear exactly as on the registration card mailed to you.
