Boat Numbers And Decals
After registering your boat you will be given an assigned number and expiration decals that will need to be affixed to your boat. Your assigned number must be painted or permanently attached to each side of the forward top half of the boat. Numbers must be vertical block letters at least three inches tall that read from left to right. They must contrast with the background color and be distinctly visible and legible. Hyphens or spaces equal to one letter width must separate letter and number groupings.
A registration decal will also be issued. This expiration decal remains on your boat for the duration of the three-year registration period. Registration decals are displayed in line with the assigned number on each side of the boat.

- Color: Must have good contrast with the hull color so its visible from a distance
- Characters: Letters and numbers should be at least 3 in a legible, non-script font
- Placement: Toward the front of the vessel reading left to right. The number needs spaces or hyphens between numerals and letters, as: MD 1234 AB or MD-1234-AB
Boat Name Youll need to name and display your boat name and hailing port only if your vessel will be documented with the United States Coast Guard. Otherwise, its your choice whether or not you display this info. The decal featuring the boat name and hailing port needs to be at least 4 tall and displayed on a visible area on the exterior of the boat.
Hull Identification Number If your boat was manufactured after 1972, itll also need a HIN . This 12-digit serial number lists the manufacturers ID code, production or serial number, month & year of production, and model year. This information is typically placed on the upper right area of the vessels transom.

Displaying Your Numbers & Decals
The “OH” number assigned to a boat stays with the boat for its lifetime in Ohio, regardless of ownership changes. ODNR assigns the OH number to your boat when it is first registered, but you, the boat owner, are responsible for properly displaying the boat’s OH number. NOTE: When you buy an Alternative Registration for Hand-powered Vessels, you are not required to display the OH number, but you must still display a valid decal.
The number assigned is in three parts beginning with “OH” followed by four numbers and two letters. Even if the number is not displayed, the boat registration card will list the boat’s OH number.
The tags or decals are the part of the registration that changes every three years. Traditional boat registrations come with two identical decals that are placed six inches from the OH number on each side of the boat. Alternative registrations display only one decal.
