Where Can I Dump My Old Boat

Going Over Your Options Where Is The Title

I almost burned down my boat! Restoring 81 year old 40′ Wooden Boat into a liveaboard

First things first, we need to know what your situation is. Addressing what kind of situation you are in will dictate how you get rid of your boat.

Things like, how important is it to get rid of? Where is it? Is the boat in your yard causing you frustration, or is it at a storage facility costing you money? What kind of boat is it? Fiberglass, aluminum?

All of these things are important to consider. Aluminum boats are easy to recycle, where fiberglass boats have to be sent to the dump.

What kind of shape is the boat in? Is the hull in decent shape, or does the engine run? If the hull is decent and the engine runs, you probably arent to the point of trashing the boat and taking a total loss on it.

What does the trailer look like? Will it make 10 feet and the axle fall off or is it road worthy?

Beginning with this type of assessment is going to really put your situation in perspective so you will know where to begin in order to dispose of the boat properly. Possibly even getting some cash out of it and just getting rid of it!

One other thing that you want to think about, is that infamous title! The big question, where is that title? Is the title in your name? Is it a clean title?

The Special Problems Of Recycling Boats

Finding and collecting suitable boats for recycling suffers from problems of scale and logisticsthere are just too many dead boats scattered over broad areas, and not enough people, money, and facilities to handle them. A news item I happened to see two years ago reported that Monroe County in the Florida Keys has that states worst derelict-boat problem, averaging over 100 collected and disposed boats each year. Monroe County spends between $1,000 to $3,000 to salvage a typical 20 to 25 boat, and all boats are trucked and dumped into landfills at $92 a ton . If the county doesnt retrieve them, the desperately poor will turn them into homes, which can create all sorts of other health and social problems. By 1997, Florida was spending about $250,000 a year on dead-boat cleanup, but could easily have spent over a million dollars if it had the budget to do so.

Boat dismantling is a big problem. No one does it right now on a regular basis or in a business-like way. The automotive industry, on the other hand, has a large dismantling sector. About 14,000 car dismantlers and scrap processors in the United States dispose of 8 to 9.5 million cars a year. The more modern operators disassemble vehicles into major components and sheet metal, and inventory these parts for resale to consumers, garages, and collision shops. We dont have a boat dismantling infrastructure yet. We have to create one because it is an essential part of the recovery process.

Some Have Organized Rows While Others

While some boat salvage yards are a mess, many have the yard well organized which makes finding used boat parts much easier. In addition you may also want to ask if they have an online inventory of their boats by brand, type, and year. This can help you find the parts you need much faster. The boat junk yard will be able to tell you exactly where a specific boat is located on the lot and possibly if it has the part you are looking for. In most boat yards, like yacht junk yards the boats are arranged side by side.

Many yards have parts just thrown in other boats, like the one below. If you are looking for a part, you can sometimes check the boat next to it to see if it was thrown in.

Places To Junk A Boat In California:

California has similar places to junk boats as those in Florida.

These are commonly located in coastal cities.

Some options include:

  • Plastics
  • Other loose trash

Because of these possible environmental hazards, you will not want to junk your boat in an improper way.

This is not only dangerous to the environment, but it is also illegal and you get a few thousand dollars in fines in addition to the cost of removal and demolition.

Landfills In The Sunny States

River Scuba Diving – Found Remains of 8 year old sunken boat

Florida and California, two top boating states with millions of registered boats between them, have state agencies and local and regional programs designed to manage derelict vessels. Most removal projects in Florida require environmental permitting from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection or the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, depending on jurisdiction.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission offers grants that local governments can use to get rid of derelict and abandoned vessels after the owner has been provided due process. In fiscal year 201819, Florida allocated $1,000,000 for this program. The vessels currently end up in a landfill.

California had approximately 800,000 registered recreational boats in 2018. California State Lands Commission has an Abandoned Vessel Program, which provides the commission the authority to remove problem boats blocking or polluting waterways. California’s Division of Boating and Waterways sponsors a no-cost Vessel Turn-In Program , aimed at the boater. Although recycling and dismantling usable parts can be part of these removal and disposal programs, the fiberglass hulls still end up in a landfill.

Can Boats Be Recycled

While fiberglass boats first appeared in the 1940s, they didnt really take off until the 1960s. These new, easily manufactured boats made it easier for a middle-class person to afford a boat of their own. This led to a boom in boat sales in the 1960s and 1970s.

Unfortunately, many of these boats are now reaching the end of their lives and are ready for disposal. It is believed that there are 35 to 40 million boats around the world nearing their end of life. Sadly, many of these boats are not being disposed of in a sustainable manner.

Boats, like cars, are made of a variety of materials. Unlike boats, however, cars have been designed with considerable thought on end-of-life disposal. Nearly every part of a car can now be taken apart and recycled. Boats, on the other hand, werent designed with disposal in mind.

Most boats from the past 50 years were made using fiberglass. While this material is incredibly durable, its also quite difficult to recycle. In fact, until recently, recycling fiberglass wasnt even possible.

Due to scientific advancements in fiberglass recycling, boat recycling is finally becoming a possibility. Yes, boats can be recycled, but it is no simple task.

How To Scrap A Boat

When scrapping a boat, you are kind of limited on what you can do. If you have a fiberglass boat. Most recycling facilities will not take your boat.

You will have to piece by piece take all of the metal and aluminum parts off, the fuel tank out, and have an empty fiberglass hull. That can be taken to a junkyard or landfill.

If you have an aluminum boat. You will need to remove all of the wood, cushions, foam, and anything that is not aluminum off of the boat. Then the recycling facility will take the boat.

You wont need a title to the boat, because it is just being scrapped.

Now if you have the title to the boat. You will probably find more value in trying to sell it for a couple of weeks. Before pulling the trigger and scrapping it out.

Hopefully, this has helped you out and letting you know what you can and cant do when it comes to scrapping a boat for some money!
