Boat Ride To Statue Of Liberty

What Is The Ferry’s Schedule

New York City | Amazing Statue of Liberty Boat Tour

The Staten Island ferry runs 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. You can ride it day and night. Night rides are quite beautiful.

The schedule is easy to understand. The ferries run every 30 minutes, on the hour and on the half-hour .

There is one exception. During weekday rush hours, the ferries run every 15 minutes.

Rush hours are 6:00 am until 9:30 am in the morning and 3:30 pm until 8:00 pm in the late afternoon and evening.

We recommend that you check the schedule and their website for any changes and updates.

TIP: If you take a night ride, you might consider combining it with our 9/11 Memorial and Brooklyn Bridge Tour offered at 8 pm on several days each week from March through October.

How Much Is Statue Of Liberty Ferry

Grounds only ticket is the most basic and popular Statue of Liberty ferry ticket and costs $25 for all adults .

Kids 4 to 12 years get a discount of $10 on the adult price and hence pay only $15 per head and seniors get a discount of $5 and pay only $20.

If you plan to go up the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty, your ticket will cost $27 for an adult, $22 for a senior, and $17 for a child.

Where To Stand To Get The Best Views

Since the ferries ride back and forth the same route every day, you will have a view of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island on both legs of the round-trip.

Most people want to see Lady Liberty right away, so when you board in Manhattan, head to the right side of the ferry and make your way upstairs to the outdoor deck.

Stake a spot along the railing and as far to the back of the vessel that you can.

This ensures that you will have the best view possible to see the Statue of Liberty on your ride out to Staten Island.

Not all ferries are identical, but the image below is of a typical vessel.

On your return trip, you might like to see the other view, so again, when you board to return to Manhattan, go to the right side upstairs deck of the ferry.

Although, it should be a bit less crowded on the Statue of Liberty side on the return trip.

For the best Lower Manhattan views and photo-ops, you must be at the back of the ferry when departing Manhattan and the front of the ferry when departing Staten Island.

One more point, you can still get good views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and other points of interest in New York Harbor from the lower decks.

These decks usually don’t have outside seating, but there are windows and you can get good photos.

Boarding Statue Of Liberty Ferry From New Jersey

To board the ferry from New Jersey , you need a Statue of Liberty ferry ticket.

All ferry tickets include the following:

  • The ferry ride to Liberty Island, Ellis Island, and back to the Mainland
  • Access to Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island
  • Access to Statue of Liberty Museum on Liberty Island
  • Access to National Museum of Immigration on Ellis Island
  • Audio Guide*
  • *You can pick up the Audio Guide, which is available in 12 languages, from the Audio Guide booth at both Liberty and Ellis Islands.

Since the Statue of Liberty is the biggest attraction, visitors also refer to these ferry tickets as the Statue of Liberty ticket.

You can buy the ferry tickets from the Statue Cruises ticket office inside the historic train terminal in Liberty State Park.

But we dont recommend that for two reasons

  • The ticket counters usually have long lines
  • Some types of tickets sell off much before, and thats why buying them online makes more sense
  • All visitors with tickets will undergo an airport-type security screening and a wait in a line to board the ferry.

Depending on the season and time of the day the wait in the line can be anywhere from five minutes to 20 minutes.

There is only one place in Manhattan you can officially have permission to come aboard a ferry bound for the Statue of Liberty. That one place is called Castle Clinton National Monument in The Battery waterfront park in Lower Manhattan.

Castle Clinton is the only circular shaped fort in Battery Park. An impressive entrance leads you inside the old fort and a less impressive exit brings you out of the rear.

You must enter a festival-style series of white canvas tents immediately to the rear of Castle Clinton. Inside you will pass through a security check and join a line in a staging area until your scheduled ferry departs.

The pier where you take the ferry to the Statue of Liberty from Manhattan is located in Battery Park, in Lower Manhattan, very close to the Castle Clinton ticket office where you buy and pick up some of the tickets to visit this famous tourist attraction.

If you are going to choose to take the ferry to the Statue of Liberty in Battery Park, I advise you to go there first thing in the morning because to pass the first security check there are very long lines and it can take you a while to get on the boat.

How Long Does It Take To Visit Both Parts Of The Tour

How long this tour will take is entirely down to your interpretation and preferences. Everyone will spend a different amount of time at both Liberty and Ellis Islands.

Are you interested in the fascinating history of immigrants arriving into Ellis Island? Or maybe youre intrigued by the engineering behind Lady Liberty?

There is no one size fits all on this tour. If you upgrade tickets, you will find both the Pedestal and Crown come with additional exhibits.

The small museum on Liberty Island gives a detailed account of how the statue was built, transported and unveiled in New York. Walking around the grounds of Liberty Island doesnt take long.

Ellis Islands immigration museum is much larger. It takes longer to complete the audio tour but is incredibly interesting and shouldnt be missed.

Wed suggest a guideline of around 2 hours for Liberty Island and 2 hours for Ellis Island.
