Missing Sales: Due To Lack Of Inventory
In Brandon, Eddie Smith manages 13 employees and owns Duncan Marine Outdoors boat store. Like Connor, Smith said selling boats has been great but bringing in more inventory has been a nightmare.
“The demand for sales have been really good but the problem is my inventory is not getting replenished fast enough,” Smith said. “I’ve missed a lot of sales due to the lack of inventory.”
Smith said most of his sales peaked right after the pandemic started. Most boat manufacturers are operating at 60% to 70% capacity, resulting to the shortage in supply, according to Smith.
“Any order that normally comes in between three to four weeks is now coming in 12 to 14 weeks,” Smith said.
In the months of May and June, Duncan Marine saw a 20% increase in sales. While the increase is good, Smith like other owners is still concerned moving ahead.
“When looking at February to December, unless something changes going into the end of the year, we are going to be down in sales by 25% or 30%,” Smith said.

The boating business is a seasonal one. Crappie fisherman boats, according to Smith, are primarily sold in the months of January and February. Then, in March and April, bass tournaments begin, requiring the selling of bass boats.
As it gets warmer, pontoon and ski boats begin to sell well in April, May, June and July.

Boat Sales: ‘the Lord Has Blessed Us’
Guy Connor, owner of Midway Marine boat store in Fulton since 1995, said his store saw a “huge upswing” from Memorial Day to Father’s Day weekend.
“We’re up nearly 30% from last year at this same time,” Connor said. “The pandemic had a lot to do with driving sales.”
At Midway Marine, fishing boats make up 80% of store’s sales while pontoon boats make up the other 20% of sales. However, the store provides additional boats.
“With so many things canceled, people aren’t able to watch their sports on TV and fishing is something everybody can do,” Connor said.
Typically around mid-June or so, sales start to decline due to warm temperatures, according to Connor.
“Nobody wants to go outside when it gets real hot,” Connor said. “We are expecting the normal drop off but I don’t think we will see a big drop off. People in Mississippi love fishing and I’ve never seen anything like it.”
Instead of a slight decline in sales, Connor hopes to keep boats stocked in his store.
“The demand is outrunning the supply so people better get the boats while they can,” Connor said.
