The New Location Will Employ About 35 People And Will Operate Hand
NEW YORK MILLS Brunswick Corporation has announced it will lease a building in Willmar, Minnesota to spread out its Lund Boat manufacturing operations while demand for boats remains high and the labor market remains thin around its New York Mills facility.
Lenn Scholz, president of Lund Boats, announced in an online meeting with New York Mills Civic and Commerce members on Tuesday, March 29 that its new location will hold about 35 employees.
Brunswick workers in New York Mills won’t lose their jobs. The change is simply to create a better work-life balance and reduce clocked overtime for workers, Scholz said.
Many New York Mills-based employees have been working overtime since demand for boats has risen. That demand, along with other factors including COVID-19, supply shortages, weather and a hiring shortage the company is currently hiring for more than 40 open positions led Brunswick to start thinking outside the box for solutions. The company is opening its new location in partnership with AgJobs in Willmar.
The Willmar location will be an extension of upholstery operations. All materials, such as wood, aluminum, carpet and vinyl, will be cut in New York Mills. Then, the crew in Willmar will complete gluing operations before materials head back to New York Mills for assembly and boat construction.
A New Manufacturing Facility For Brunswick Corporation Which Manufactures Lund Boats Will Work In Conjunction With The Company’s New York Mills Manufacturing Facility The Company Is Bringing A Small Part Of Its Operation To Willmar To Alleviate A Labor Shortage In Its Main Location
WILLMAR A tight labor market in a small community about 100 miles north of Willmar led to a creative solution for Brunswick Corporation, which manufactures Lund Boats.
New York Mills is a city of approximately 1,300 people, and the Lund Boat manufacturing facility in that city employs 600 people, according to Brian Hines, vice president of operations for Lund Boats.
So, as you can imagine, it’s very difficult to hire up there, so we have been looking for ways to sort of get away from our labor market a little bit and get to a strong labor market, which Willmar is, Hines explained to the city of Willmars Planning Commission at its meeting Wednesday. The commission was hearing the preliminary plan for the manufacturing facility that will be located in a leased building at 350 45th St. N.W.
Lund Boats plans to employ 30 to 35 local people at the manufacturing facility through a contract with AgJobs, according to Hines.
Most of their employees are Spanish-speaking employees, so they will also provide us with some support and supervision support, and also, just an ability to bus people in, Hines said.
While some employees will drive themselves and organize their own car pools, transportation in the form of a van or small bus will be coordinated between AgJobs and Lund Boats for those who need it. Workers can also utilize Central Community Transit, the local public transportation.

NEW YORK MILLS, Minn. A Lund boat begins as a roll of aluminum. Just a large coil of extremely heavy-grade foil, if you want to look at it that way.

Lund boats are the top-selling fishing craft in the Upper Midwest. Crestliner, another popular aluminum fishing boat, is also based at the Lund complex. Both brands are owned by Illinois-based Brunswick Corp., the largest maker of pleasure boats in the world.
“We’ll go through 8 million pounds of aluminum in a year,” said Jason Oakes, marketing director for Lund.

Brunswick Corporation’s New York Mills Operation Partners With United Way To Help Students Get Back To School
New York Mills, Minn. Employees of Brunswick Corporation’s New York Mills Operation, home of Lund and Crestliner boats, recently partnered with the United Way to host its second annual Stuff the Boat event to help local families with back to school supply needs. A new twist to this years event was the addition of a boat raffle which was used to raise additional funds on top of the donations of school supplies.
Early this spring the Employee Activities Committee started the planning and worked with the local New York Mills VFW to establish a boat raffle for a Lund 1675 Adventure SS with a Mercury 75 HP engine. Employees then sold raffle tickets around the community to raise nearly $10,000. The funds raised will be split between two programs with half going towards the Stuff the Boat program while the other half will be donated to the New York Mills school activity fund.
Last year we were able to help over 100 families with back to school needs and our employees were looking for a way to build upon last years success to make an even larger impact on our local community, said Mary Allen, a member of the committee. Our employees were just looking to make a larger impact and the raffle boat seemed like a perfect opportunity.
