A: Boat, ATV and Snowmobile owners will receive a registration renewal notice at least one month prior to the expiration of their current registration. You have the following options to renew.

  • Return with enclosed envelope write your registration number or renewal number on check.

Ohios Boat Registration Exemptions:

  • Boats that have been federally documented by the Coast Guard.
  • Boats numbered by another state and operated in Ohio for 60 days or less.
  • Boats from a country other than the United States that are temporarily using Ohios waterways.
  • Boats owned by the United States, a state or political subdivision.
  • The lifeboats of a ship.
  • Boats exempted by the chief of the Division of Watercraft.
  • Boats under a waiver issued for a race or special event.
  • Canoes, rowboats and inflatable boats that have Alternative Registration.
  • Sailboards , kite boards, paddleboards, belly boats and float tubes.

Here is how to read the hull registration number especially if your concern is to know the age of the vessel. Part of the HIN comprises the month in which construction commenced and the year in the last two bits. The first part of this pair has characters that denote month as coded accordingly by Transport Canada Marine Safety. The months are assigned alphabetical characters running from A for January to L for December. In the example above, for instance, CA-ABC1AB11F020 would indicate that the vessel construction commenced in June model year 2020 .

Michigan Boat Registration Numbers

Michigan boat registration numbers must be attached on each side of the forward half of the vessel as high above the water line as possible it must be the only number on the forward half of the bow.

The boat registration number must contrast with the color of the background and be clearly visible. It should be plain, block font style at least 3 inches high must also be able to be read from left to right.

There must be a hyphen or space placed between the numbers and letters, for example: MC 123 AA.

Michigan boating law states upon receipt of a certificate of number for a vessel, the owner of that vessel shall paint on or attach in a permanent manner to each side of the forward half of the vessel the number identified in the certificate of number, in the manner prescribed by rules promulgated by the department. The secretary of state shall assign to the owner of vessels for rent or lease a block of numbers sufficient to number consecutively all of that owner’s rental or lease vessels. The owner shall maintain the numbers in a legible condition.

Colorado Boat Registration Numbers

Colorado boat registration numbers should be affixed to both sides of the forward half of the vessel. These should be the only numbers on the forward half of the boat.

A: In Massachusetts, initial registration and titling is done by filling out the department’s registration application at any of five Registration offices. The boat owner must submit proof of ownership, a bill of sale, proof of payment of Massachusetts sales tax, and the appropriate registration and/or title fees. For new boats, an original manufacturer’s statement of origin must be provided as proof of ownership. An MSO, title, or previous registration can serve as proof of ownership for used boats.

Vessels that are propelled by sail can have the number placed on each side of the bow or deck on each side of the mast or boom.

The registration emblem provided by the state needs to be adhered 4 inches from the registration number on either side of the bow. The emblem will be placed 4 inches behind the number on the port side and 4 inches in front of the number on the starboard side of the vessel. Registration certificates must also be kept onboard the vessel.

The state does not explain whether or not it is necessary to register your vessel with the U.S. Coast Guard. It can be assumed that it is an optional process and is not required within Iowa.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources does not provide free or paid numbers to place on your vessel. It is the responsibility of the vessels owner to purchase an identification number to place on the hull. All sailboats with mechanical propulsion must be registered regardless of length. Sailboats less than 12 feet in length without mechanical prolusion do not require registration.
