A: Boat, ATV and Snowmobile owners will receive a registration renewal notice at least one month prior to the expiration of their current registration. You have the following options to renew.

Ohios Boat Registration Exemptions:
- Boats that have been federally documented by the Coast Guard.
- Boats numbered by another state and operated in Ohio for 60 days or less.
- Boats from a country other than the United States that are temporarily using Ohios waterways.
- Boats owned by the United States, a state or political subdivision.
- The lifeboats of a ship.
- Boats exempted by the chief of the Division of Watercraft.
- Boats under a waiver issued for a race or special event.
- Canoes, rowboats and inflatable boats that have Alternative Registration.
- Sailboards , kite boards, paddleboards, belly boats and float tubes.

How To Read The Hull Registration Number
Here is how to read the hull registration number especially if your concern is to know the age of the vessel. Part of the HIN comprises the month in which construction commenced and the year in the last two bits. The first part of this pair has characters that denote month as coded accordingly by Transport Canada Marine Safety. The months are assigned alphabetical characters running from A for January to L for December. In the example above, for instance, CA-ABC1AB11F020 would indicate that the vessel construction commenced in June model year 2020 .

Michigan Boat Registration Numbers
Michigan boat registration numbers must be attached on each side of the forward half of the vessel as high above the water line as possible it must be the only number on the forward half of the bow.
The boat registration number must contrast with the color of the background and be clearly visible. It should be plain, block font style at least 3 inches high must also be able to be read from left to right.
There must be a hyphen or space placed between the numbers and letters, for example: MC 123 AA.
Michigan boating law states upon receipt of a certificate of number for a vessel, the owner of that vessel shall paint on or attach in a permanent manner to each side of the forward half of the vessel the number identified in the certificate of number, in the manner prescribed by rules promulgated by the department. The secretary of state shall assign to the owner of vessels for rent or lease a block of numbers sufficient to number consecutively all of that owner’s rental or lease vessels. The owner shall maintain the numbers in a legible condition.
Colorado Boat Registration Numbers
Colorado boat registration numbers should be affixed to both sides of the forward half of the vessel. These should be the only numbers on the forward half of the boat.
The boat registration number must be in three inch, block style lettering. The numbers should be easily read left to right. The registration number color must contrast with its background color.
Letters must be separated from the numbers by a space or hyphen, for example: CL 1234 AA. No other numbers may be displayed on either side of the bow.
Colorado law states It is unlawful for any person to operate or use a vessel on the waters of this state or to possess a vessel at a vessel staging area unless the vessel has been numbered and a certificate of the number, referred to in this article as a âregistrationâ, has been issued to the vessel by the division.

A: In Massachusetts, initial registration and titling is done by filling out the department’s registration application at any of five Registration offices. The boat owner must submit proof of ownership, a bill of sale, proof of payment of Massachusetts sales tax, and the appropriate registration and/or title fees. For new boats, an original manufacturer’s statement of origin must be provided as proof of ownership. An MSO, title, or previous registration can serve as proof of ownership for used boats.
In order to complete the application, you must provide the vessel’s Hull Identification Number and the boat’s year of manufacture, make, and length. State law requires that the title application must be made and the sales tax paid within 20 days of purchasing a boat. The Division also stores information such as the engine manufacturer, serial number, and horsepower for record keeping purposes.

Vessels that are propelled by sail can have the number placed on each side of the bow or deck on each side of the mast or boom.
The registration emblem provided by the state needs to be adhered 4 inches from the registration number on either side of the bow. The emblem will be placed 4 inches behind the number on the port side and 4 inches in front of the number on the starboard side of the vessel. Registration certificates must also be kept onboard the vessel.
The state does not explain whether or not it is necessary to register your vessel with the U.S. Coast Guard. It can be assumed that it is an optional process and is not required within Iowa.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources does not provide free or paid numbers to place on your vessel. It is the responsibility of the vessels owner to purchase an identification number to place on the hull. Illinois boating law states that it is unlawful operation of unnumbered watercraft. Every watercraft other than non-powered watercraft on waters within the jurisdiction of this State shall be numbered. No person may operate, use, or store or give permission for the operation, usage, or storage of any such watercraft on such waters unless it has on board while in operation.

I Have A Sailboat Without A Motor Does It Have To Be Registered
All sailboats with mechanical propulsion must be registered regardless of length. Sailboats less than 12 feet in length without mechanical prolusion do not require registration. Sailboats 12 feet or longer must be registered whether or not they have mechanical propulsion. Boats operated exclusively on private ponds or lakes do not have to be registered.

2015 Arkansa Code. All watercraft must be registered and have the corresponding registration number displayed on both sides of the bow. This includes all boats propelled by a sail or motor.

Numbers: You can use any method you want to display the boat’s OH numbers — for example, applying vinyl letters or painting them on. There are location, size, and style requirements:
- The OH numbers are to be displayed on the left and right front of the boat .
- The number reads from left to right.
- Use block characters of good proportion that are a minimum of 3 inches in height.
- Characters should be one color that contrasts with the background or boat color.
- The number must be maintained to be clearly visible and legible.

Six inches from the numbers, toward the back of the boat , the Ohio Registration Decal should be displayed one on each side. The decals are identical they show their expiration date. Colors of the decal change every year so from afar, law enforcement officers can tell if your boat decal is expired.

Registration decals must be displayed within six inches of the attached or painted registration numbers. The state will provide registration decals but will not offer free or paid registration numbers to place on your vessel.
