A Pleasure Craft Licence
Transport Canada has a requirement that pleasure-craft over 10 HP be licensed, requiring your boat license number to be displayed on the hull.

A pleasure craft licence provides a unique identification number – commonly referred to as the “licence number” – that an owner of a pleasure craft must display on the bow. This number helps law enforcement and search and rescue officials trace a pleasure craft to its owner. An owner must display the licence number on both sides of the bow of the pleasure craft, above the water line, in block characters not less than 7.5 centimetres high and in a colour that contrasts with the colour of the bow.
The licence is mandatory for all pleasure craft equipped with motors of 10 horsepower or more, including personal watercraft.

If you need to register your boat, it may not be as hard as you think. In fact, you can probably register your boat online. The process to sign up been made much easier recently. In part because of covid 19. But also because online boat registrations are just faster and easier. Many boat owners do this in a few minutes once per year to stay up to date.

What Are The Ways To Identify A Boat
The first step in identifying the owner is to identify the boat. Boats have many identifying features including registration numbers, names, and hull identification numbers. The most visible feature will be the name or registration number.
Documented vessels, normally found on navigable waters like oceans, large rivers, or the Great Lakes, are usually larger and are federally registered.
They are identified at a distance by their name, which will be on the stern in at least 4-inch block letters. Most will have the name on either side of the bow above the waterline as well, although this is not required for recreational vessels.
The home port of the vessel is included below the name on the stern. These boats will also have a registration number posted in their cabins, however, this number will probably not be visible without boarding the craft.

All sailboats with mechanical propulsion must be registered regardless of length. Sailboats less than 12 feet in length without mechanical prolusion do not require registration. Sailboats 12 feet or longer must be registered whether or not they have mechanical propulsion. Boats operated exclusively on private ponds or lakes do not have to be registered.

Minnesota boat registration numbers should be placed on each side of the bow in such a position as that it is clear and legible. Boat numbers must be the only number on the forward half of the watercraft.
The number should be a color that contrasts with the background. The letters and numerals need to be able to be read from left to right and should be three inches in height. They need to be three inches high.
The numbers and letters should be separated with a space or hyphen, for example: MN-1234-AA.
Minnesota boating law states that 86B.301 WATERCRAFT LICENSES REQUIRED. Subdivision 1.Requirement. Except as provided in subdivisions 2 and 3, a person may not operate or give permission for the operation of a watercraft that requires a watercraft license on the waters of this state.

New York Boat Registration Numbers
New York boat registration numbers consists of the letters “NY”, four numbers, and two ending letters. A space or a hyphen should separate the first and last two letters from the four numbers, for example: NY 1234 AA. The numbers are required to be attached to both sides of the vesselâs bow the registration number should be the only number on the forward half of the boat.

Tips For Finding A Boat Owner By Hull #
- Ask the marina owner and neighboring boat owners if they know who owns the boat. If they do not know, perhaps they can pass along a message for you.
- Post a notice at the site where the boat is located, stating that you are searching for the owner of a specific boat. In addition to your contact information, you may wish to include a picture of the boat.
- Use Facebook lost and found groups
- Enter the name of the boat into an Internet search engine like Google to see if there is a website that mentions the boat and its owner. This is a good way to track an owner of a boat that is linked to a business with its own website.
- Post an ad with a picture of the boat in the local newspaper or on a website with a Lost and Found section.

Since states require the HIN to appear on registration certificates, you can find the boats owner by purchasing a boat history report online and paying with a credit card. Not all States will disclose this information so it is not guaranteed in the Boat Alert report.
Us Coast Guard Documented Vessels
For boats where Georgia is the state of primary use, documentation by the U.S. Coast Guard does not exempt the State of Georgia vessel registration requirement. Documentation by the U.S. Coast Guard only removes the requirement that the state registration numbers must be displayed on the vessel. You are still required to display the valid Georgia registration decal.

License Numbers For Your Pleasure Craft
At a minimum, licensing is required for pleasure craft in Canada if your boat has an engine that over ten horsepower and is not used for commercial purposes. If you fall into this category, you will want to complete the paperwork needed so you can license your vessel. You will be assigned a license number that you must then place on your boat according to the regulations put out by Transport Canada. The numbers must be at least three inches and in block lettering. They also must be placed on the hull of the ship on both sides so that they are as far forward as possible and visible above the waterline.
