Your Unwanted Boat Is Welcome At The Lake Champlain Maritime Museum
When the tail-end of Vermont’s short boating season prompts some nautical folk to re-consider ownership of a kayak or yacht, the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum renews its call for donations of unwanted craft.
Proceeds from the re-sale of gifted boats benefit the Vergennes-based nonprofit’s youth programs, including on-the-water environmental studies, competitive rowing and winter boat-building.
Fixer-uppers? Probably not.
“Some boats we’re willing to put a little elbow grease into,” Patch said Tuesday. “The key word here is ‘marketable.'”
LCMM sells its donated boats through local brokers as well as on its website which currently features two touring kayaks, an Adirondack guide boat, a hand-built wooden canoe and a 31-foot sloop, the “Hornpipe,” which was built in Great Britain in the mid-1960s .
Looking for a tugboat of similar vintage, converted into a houseboat and then donated? It doesn’t hurt to look. But in this case, someone beat you to it.
Confirmed landlubbers have something to gawk at, too: Saturday from 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., at least eight high school rowing teams coached by LCMM will compete along the Burlington waterfront some of them in wooden boats they built themselves.

The History Of Lake Champlain
The Lake was a corridor along which Native, French, English and American forces vied for control. Eventually, the lake was named in 1609 by French explorer Samuel de Champlain and during the Revolutionary War, the lake was an important asset for allowing movement from the colonies to Canada and keeping New England a strong, connected force.
