    Registering Your New Hampshire Boat Trailer

    How Do I Register Or Transfer Plates To A Vehicle Motorcycle Or Trailer In Salem

    Please know the Town of Salem and State of New Hampshire have many laws and ordinances with respect to the registration of vehicles. As Municipal Agents for the NH DMV and Clerks for the Town of Salem, we must follow all current laws and ordinances.     Registering vehicles in the State of New Hampshire MUST start at the municipal/local level, first: at the Salem Town Hall.     Do I need to register my boat? –

    A: The registration certificate is proof that the boat is registered. It also serves as proof of ownership if the boat is not titled or documented. The registration certificate should be available for inspection on board the motorboat whenever it is in operation.

    The registration number is assigned when you register your boat for the first time. It should be painted or attached to each side of the forward half of the boat. It should read from left to right, be in block letters not less than three inches high, and contrast with the color of the boat’s hull. The number consists of the letters MS followed by no more than four numbers and two capital letters. A two-inch space or hyphen must separate the letters and the numbers. The registration number is issued to the boat owner and not the vessel. Therefore, it can be transferred to different boats for a given owner, but it cannot be transferred to a new owner.

    The registration decal should be placed in line with and three inches to the stern of the registration number on the port side of the boat. The decal is issued with the initial registration and each registration renewal it indicates the month and year that the registration expires.

    Generally, boats must be registered in their state if they have a gasoline, diesel or electric motor, including a trolling motor. Personal Watercrafts are considered motorized crafts and needs to be registered in most states. Sailboats without auxiliary power must be registered if over a certain size like eight feet, but that differs by state. The registration requirements for kayaks, paddleboards, canoes, rowboats and other human-powered craft also differ by state but most dont need to be registered.

    Requirements for vessel registration vary from state to state. In New Hampshire, you must have a Certificate of Registration and validation decals to operate a vessel legally on public waters. This includes motorboats of any size and sailboats or sailboards 12 feet in length or longer. The only exceptions are:

    • Other small, non-motorized vessels, such as canoes and kayaks
    • Vessels registered in other states using New Hampshire waters for 30 or fewer consecutive days

    Registering Your Boat With The New Hampshire Dmv

    All motor-operated boats operated on public waters in New Hampshire must be registered with the state’s Division of Motor Vehicles. This includes any boat with an inboard or outboard motor, excluding sailboats under 12 feet. Boats owned by the U.S. government and those just passing through are exempt.

    You’ll want to start your registration process by filling in a DMV boat registration form, called DSMV form 157A. You’ll also need proof of ownership, like a bill of sale in your name and your picture identification.

    If your boat doesn’t have a 12-digit hull identification number, you must also obtain a DSMV form called Verification of Vessel Identification. It has to be completed and signed by a New Hampshire law enforcement officer under penalty of perjury.

    If you are wondering how to renew a boat registration in New Hampshire, note that all NH registrations expire on December 31 of every year, regardless of when you first obtained the registration.     First Time Registration Of A New Or New To You Boat

    You must provide proof of ownership to register a boat in any of the following forms:

  • Properly executed bill of sale, OR
  • A title, OR a certificate of origin, OR a manufacturers statement of origin, OR
  • A registration signed over to the new owner by the previous owner
  • Your boat must have a Hull Identification Number . Any boats manufactured after 1972 with a short or no HIN, homemade boats, and boats that do not have a compliant HIN must be inspected only by a NH marine patrol officer or a NH law enforcement officer. You may print a Verification of Vessel Identification RDMV690 for the officer to complete.

    To transfer a registration to another boat:
    • The primary owner of the old boat and the primary owner of the new boat must be the same.
    • You must have the original current registration for the boat you are transferring from. Copies will not be accepted. This gets surrendered at the time of the transfer.
    • You must have the proper proof of ownership for the new boat.
    To renew your boat registration, you must have one of the following:
    • The previous boat registration, OR
