Freedom Boat Club Offers Joy Of Boating Minus The Ownership Hassles

Considering buying a boat?

The owners of Freedom Boat Club have a less expensive alternative: the Zipcar of the sea.

For a one-time enrollment fee of $5,500 and a $349-a-month subscription, members get access to nearly 100 boats at nine marinas throughout coastal Massachusetts.

The fleet ranges from a high-end cruiser equipped with a shower, kitchen, and sleeping area for four to a top-of-the-line fishing boat and a leisurely pontoon.

Although the bill may seem hefty, co-owner Matt OConnor said the boat-sharing service appeals to busy people who do not have the time or the desire to deal with the maintenance, storage, and transportation hassles typically associated with boat ownership.

The average customer is that C-level executive who has kids, likes to golf, doesnt have time necessarily to own a boat, still wants access to a boat, and doesnt want to do maintenance, OConnor said. We give them the ability to reserve whatever boat, at whatever location, at whatever time, and for any activity that they want.

Freedom Boat Club started with one location in Sarasota, Fla., in 1989 and grew to become a franchise business with 90 locations in the United States, spanning the country from Portsmouth, N.H., to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to San Diego.

OConnor and his partner, Matt Carrick, own nine locations in Massachusetts with nearly 700 members. Boats are available at marinas in Danvers, Boston, Quincy, Hingham, Scituate, Falmouth, East Dennis, West Dennis, and Chatham.

The Freedom Boat Club Offers A Full

As with any coastal settlements, boating is a central aspect of the culture along the Massachusetts and Cape Cod shoreline. Parading along the ocean and breathing in the salt air with loved ones is the essence of lighthearted summer joy, as beachgoers observe from the sand with envy. Its no secret that owning a boat is a pretty penny, from fuel cost, to storage, maintenance and insurance. Freedom Boat Club, established in Sarasota, Florida, pioneered a solution: a full-service boating club membership. For members, its as simple as strolling up to a pristine boat completely prepped for a day at sea. The hassle of everything accompanying boat ownership vanishes, and youre left simply with the joy of boating in its purest form.

When the company began in 1989, the revolutionary business model focused on a vision to make recreational boating more accessible. It is now the largest boat club in the nation, with locations throughout the United States as well as Canada, France and soon England. A membership grants boaters access to any port across their 275 locations. Whether youre at your local marina or across the country, the luxury is the always the same.

Freedom Boat Club: Enjoy Cincinnati’s Sights By Water

Ahoy!

Are you thinking about spending summer weekends poolside or traveling toward the coast for a beach vacation? Well, if being near a body of water is what you desire, check out Freedom Boat Club, right here in Cincinnati. You can access a boat and enjoy the city by water without the hassle or large costs associated with owning your watercraft.

Matthew Carrick, one of the owners of Freedom Boat Club of Greater Cincinnati, has been involved in this business since 2008. He first owned locations in Cape Cod, then Greater Boston, and then the New Jersey area before taking over the Lake Erie locations in 2019. With Carricks recent acquisition of the Cincinnati franchise, Freedom Boat Club members can now enjoy unlimited access to Cincinnati, Catawba, and Cleveland clubs and boats, plus reciprocal rights to over 300 other locations in the United States, Canada and Europe.

You can see the location of all 300 clubs in the reservation system, and grab a boat in Cape Cod, Chicago, Florida, and now even Spain and England, Carrick notes.

Offering mainly powerboats, Freedom Boat Club also owns a few sailboats available at some locations. All of our boats are either brand-new or like-new, Carrick explains. They are three years old or newer. One day you can be on a tubing or water-skiing boat, and the next trip you can get a pontoon boat and go swimming with your friends or opt for a fishing boat. The types of boats available vary by location.

How Does it Work?

Freedom Boat Club: The New Wave Of Bay State Boating

Freedom Boat Club of Cape Canaveral – Learn How it Works

To most consumers, boats embody three things recreation, fun, and financial headaches.

The old adage about the two best days in a boat owners life being buying one and selling one still seemingly rings true to this day, yet Freedom Boat Club is out to ensure that every day spent on the water in their immaculate line of boats is a best day for members thanks to the service and ease the worlds largest members-only boating club provides.

Freedom Boat Club Massachusetts franchise owners Matt Carrick and Matt OConnor currently operate eight locations spanning the North Shore to Cape Cod, and are set to open a ninth in Chatham. Both Carrick and OConnor eagerly look to the future in terms of attracting new members and expanding the clubs ever-growing fleet.

There are certainly enough people in the marketplace that want to go boating, Matt OConnor said. Were always looking at expansion locations and adding more boats and adding more members and I dont think we would stop expanding anytime soon.

Carrick and OConnor have seen the potential in boat clubs growing over several years. In fact, its what caused them to merge their respective franchises to make one Bay State super-franchise. Along with Chatham, their FBCs Massachusetts locations also include Danvers, Boston, Quincy, Hingham, Scituate, Falmouth, East Dennis, and West Dennis.

The Truth About Freedom Boat Club

I almost didnt do it

Growing up we always had a boat and recently Ive been itching to get one.

But then I started crunching the numbers

You need to pay for the down payment, monthly payments, registration, insurance, maintenance, trailer, and storage, among other things.

Plus, you only have one boat.

What if I want to take my kids out tubing, or go bass fishing, or get into some skinny water looking for snook and redfish?

One type of boat is not ideal for the variety of activities we like to do on the water

Which lead me to Freedom Boat Club.

Id heard lots of misinformation about Freedom Boat Club regarding their prices, the number of times you can take their boats out, etc., so Freedom Boat Club wasnt even on my radar for the longest time

But the price of getting my own boat made me reevaluate my options.

In this podcast episode, I have my man Alex Anchor from the Winter Haven Freedom Boat Club to help talk about the pros, cons, and misconceptions when it comes to Freedom Boat Club.

Im not getting paid by them and this is not a sponsored post, but Salt Strong is all about helping you make memories on the water with your loved ones and this is one of the best deals Ive done when it comes to boating and fishing.

Ive been enjoying being a part of the Club and I just wanted to share this with you in hopes of clearing up some misconceptions.

At 31 Matthew Carrick Leaves Career In Finance To Return To Cape

Freedom Boat Club Cape Cod

WEST DENNIS Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School graduate Matthew Carrick is bucking the trend of 30-somethings leaving the Cape.

Carrick, 31, a member of D-Y’s Class of ’94, has moved back to Dennis to start the second Freedom Boat Club franchise on Cape.

After graduating from Babson College almost 10 years ago with a degree in business Carrick worked in banking, investment consulting, and software consulting. A year ago, he and a friend were looking to buy a boat and they stumbled across the Freedom Boat Club franchise in Quincy.

He liked the basic business model and the idea of returning to the Cape.

“I went from a kid who thought he’d like to get into boating, to a business opportunity,” he said. “It’s like a country club for boating.”

With 43 franchises from Newburyport to Austin, Texas, Freedom Boat builds on a customer base that has either owned boats and is tired of the hassle and costs of ownership, or the uninitiated who want to join the boating world, but don’t want the open-ended expenses of cleaning, repairing, and storing a vessel. The club has 3,500 members nationally.

Club members at Carrick’s franchise pay around $15,000 to join for three years and get access to four new vessels and can use vessels at any of the other franchises around the country.

Bob Garland, who is part-owner of the Freedom Boat Club in Falmouth, said the new pricing system developed by the parent company really boosted membership.

Freedom Boat Club Comes To Provincetown

Freedom Boat Club announces the opening of a new members-only boat-sharing franchise in Provincetown.

Matt Carrick and Matt OConnor, franchise owners and operators, ows 13 other Freedom Boat Clubs in Massachusetts. The concept allows members to enjoy the boating lifestyle without the hassles and high costs of owing a boat. Founded in 1989 in Sarasota, Fla., the nations largest members-only boat club pays for docking, storage, insurance, maintenance, training and cleaning. Members pay for the cost of fuel they use.

Massachusetts, and Cape Cod in particular, is a great boating state where members have enjoyed unlimited access to over 170 boats from Beverly to Chatham. Now, our reach will extend as far as P-town, said Carrick. Members get all the benefits of boat ownership without having to worry about the hassles and high costs of owning a boat, Carrick said.

Carrick noted that during the pandemic, many Freedom Boat Club members have enjoyed boating to maintain social distance and to stay safe during recreational activities.

The vessels that will be docked include Key West Center Consoles and Scout Center Consoles. As membership grows, more vessels will be added to the fleet, Carrick said.

Freedom Boat Club will be hiring a dock manager, dock masters and training captains for the new location.
