Storing A Boat On A Trailer:

Keeping a boat on a trailer at your home is the most economical way to store your boat, but there are some things to consider:

  • You need a yard or driveway large enough to store your boat and a vehicle large enough to tow it.
  • Is the area where youll store your boat secure?
  • Who will shrink wrap the boat for you?
  • Going for a spur-of-the-moment trip will be more difficult as youll need to hook up your trailer and commute to the closest boat launch, but you have the flexibility to drive to a variety of locations.

Tips for purchasing a trailer:

Ensure your trailer is the correct size and weight capacity for your boat and that it conforms to Transport Canadas marker and light requirements and you meet MTOs licensing and brake requirements. Your trailer must be insured the fee is generally less than $200 per year.

Birthday Bonus For Georgia Boat Owners

Starting July 2013, Georgia residents who have a boat registered with the state can fish on their birthday as part of their boat registration fee.

Its a one-day bonus for the states some 300,000 resident boat owners. This offer from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources also covers use of some DNR shooting ranges, plus some other sporting privileges. To take advantage of it, boat owners just have to get outdoors.

The birthday bonus is a one-day resident combination license that not only allows Georgians 16 and older who own a vessel and have a valid, current registration to fish , it covers many other recreational opportunities, including fishing at public fishing areas, accessing state lands where a Georgia Outdoor Recreational Pass is otherwise required, hunting small game and feral hogs on private land, and using shooting ranges where a license is required.

The license is good for the primary boat owners birthday during the three years the boat registration is valid.

Boat owners must carry a Georgia ID, such as a drivers license, and their plastic vessel registration card to show proof of a valid vessel registration. Activities like mountain trout fishing and big-game and migratory bird hunting require additional paid licenses. Saltwater fishing requires an additional free permit.

Certificate Of Title Or Manufacturers Statement Of Origin

Boats previously registered in Wisconsin

Boats 16 feet in length or greater previously registered in Wisconsin are titled. The seller must provide you with the original Certificate of Title for you to transfer the boat into your name. The Certificate of Title must be signed if the Certificate of Title lists more than one owner and the names are separated by the word and, all owners listed on the title must sign. If the word or separates the names, any of the owners listed on the title may sign.

Boats previously registered in another state

To register and title the boat, the DNR will need the original signed Certificate of Title if the boat is coming from a state that titles boats or a registration card if the boat is coming from a state that does not title boats.

Boats never registered before

Applications to register new boats, or boats that have never been registered in any state, require the original Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin to be submitted in lieu of Certificate of Title.

Small Vessel First Time Registration

The Small Vessel First Time Registration is similar to the regular First Time Registration. The difference is that it is intended for small non-pleasure vessels that have 10 or more horsepower, including commercial river rafts. It requires similar information, but not nearly as much as the First Time Registration because this document is only for non-pleasure vessels. When registering a small vessel you will instead need to give a descriptor, sub descriptors, and second sub descriptors if applicable. The National Registry Center Corps website has an appendix that you can refer to when choosing the sub descriptors. For example, if you choose ferry as the descriptor you are automatically given cable, cargo, passenger, and vehicle as options for sub descriptors. If tug is the appropriate descriptor then the site gives you boom boat, cargo, harbor, salvage, tender, and workboat as options.
