How Much Does Boat Detailing Cost

Price Of New Sailboats

How To Price A Boat Detail | Boat Detailing Business Tips

I’ve looked at the prices of thousands of yachts on one of the largest yacht marketplaces in the world . This is what I came up with:

  • Source: Yachtworld, prices as of January 7th, 2019

I’ve used these numbers to calculate the following list:

Here’s the detailed price per foot for all lengths from 20 to 100 feet:

  • 20 – 25 ft: $1,400 per ft
  • 25 – 30 ft: $2,600 per ft
  • 35 – 40 ft: $3,000 per ft
  • 30 – 35 ft: $5,000 per ft
  • 40 – 50 ft: $6,400 per ft
  • 35 – 40 ft: $6,400 per ft
  • 50 – 60 ft: $11,000 per ft
  • 60 – 80 ft: $32,000 per ft
  • 80 – 100 ft: $50,000 per ft

Joining A Sailing Club

If you’re new to sailing, you might want to consider joining a sailboat club. This might help you to get tips, make friends, and learn in a safe environment. Most clubs also organize races, which are a great way to quickly improve your sailing skills.

But it comes at a cost. Sailing clubs are very expensive.

Initiation fees range anywhere between $1,000 – $4,000. But that’s not all.

Then there’s an annual fee of $500 – $1,000 per year. And lot’s of additional fees: for dining, lockers, etc.

If you’re willing to skip Christmas, go for it.

What Are The Benefits

Not only does detailing improves the appearance of the boat, but it also extends its usable life. When vessels are exposed to saline environments and UV radiation, the furnishing on the surface starts to fade and wear off over time. Metal components and surfaces can corrode also, and itll affect their performance. With this operation, the surfaces are refurbished, and this enhances their resilience to the harsh environments.

The cost of cleaning depends on a lot of variables. Plus, the cleaning job tends to be a lot more delicate than the exterior. Boat interiors are mostly light-colored.

The choice of light colors is deliberate as such interiors will normally heat up or see a significant temperature rise as theyre most exposed.

How Much To Winterize A Boat

How much does it cost to clean a boat

With ownership of a boat, comes responsibility.

This responsibility involves maintaining your boat and ensuring that your investment is kept safe.

The harsh season of winter can be devastating to your boat. The winter is not forgiving at all. Therefore, its important that you take precautions to keep your boat protected.

This is where the act of Winterizing comes into play. This is essentially the process of preparing your boat for the winter. There are quite a few things which this process involves, such as flushing your engine, draining the boat of all fuel and fluids, disconnecting electronics, washing the boat and more.

You may now be wondering how much to winterize a boat? This comes down to many different factors. Whether youre winterizing your boat yourself or paying someone to do it professionally makes a huge difference in the average cost to winterize a boat.

This article will go into detail on the cost to winterize a boat.

The Problem With Charging Boat Detailing Per

Setting your boat detailing prices is complex, and it can be tempting to offer menu-style pricing to keep it simple. Even if you decide to charge per foot, this pricing method doesnt account for all the variables that go into your work. This means that you could be leaving dollars on the table and under-valuing your time.

Lets start with an example, and lets say you offer two different pricing packages. A basic wash, which would include a wash of the hull and topside as well as the gutter tracks, might be $2 to $4 per foot. Then the premium package, which would involve a thorough detail including a polish, mildew and rust removal, seat conditioning, protectant and wax application, would be $16 to $20 per foot. This boat detailing pricing method works well when the only variable is the boats size.

However, what if you come across variables that go beyond just the size of the boat? For example: stains, wear-and-tear, oxidation, etc. This is when you should consider implementing variable-based pricing. Thats because the type of boat and condition of the boar is equally or more important than its size.

When setting your boat detailing prices, you should think about the variables it will take to get a boat back to looking like new. Instead of thinking about the size of the boat, you should think about your time.

If you start using variable-based pricing, youll start charging what your time is actually worth. But how do you come up with high-value detailing prices?

Detailing your boat on a regular basis is a must, due to the saltwater that can damage the gel-coat, glass, clear plastics, vinyl, metal railings, and fixtures. Along with salt water, the suns rays can severely oxidize your boats surfaces causing it to appear chalky. If, when you run your hand over your boats surface it feels bumpy it is in need of a good polishing to remove the debris and fallout that was left by Mother Nature.

Once the boat is cleaned and polished it needs to be waxed. This is essential to protect your boat from many of the pollutants that can permanently harm it. Waxing is also what gives it that deep shine and wet look, making your boat stand out above the rest.

Engine cleaning is an important service for boats. It helps with their resale value and makes working on the engine much easier. For an extra fee, inboards are cleaned entirely by hand. This is the safest way to clean an engine as there is no danger of getting water in the intake. Outboards are cleaned and waxed as part of the full detail price.

The deck area is thoroughly cleaned, along with the captains area, and all railings and fixtures. The gauges and controls are next, with a detailed cleaning of all cracks and crevices. Where Should You Get Your Rv Detailing From

While you might find a professional RV detailer in some places, many areas do not have detailing companies that offer to deep-clean everything. They might just offer services for the exterior of the RV, like waxing, polishing, and cleaning out the tires.

However, there are some places where you cannot find an RV detailer at all. In such circumstances, you will have to drive your RV to a location where they do. If this is not possible, there is another way to get your RV detailed. Simply, find a car detailer and pay them to clean the exterior. Next, get in touch with a cleaning company to deep-clean the interior.

If you own a larger RV, a car detailer might not be equipped or specialized enough to deal with your RV. Comparatively, smaller Class C RVs can be easier to clean by these companies. Before you take your motorhome to any detailer, make sure that they can handle classic RV exteriors like fiberglass, vinyl, or aluminum.

Although it might sound quite tedious to take your RV from one place to another for just a clean-up, it will prove to be beneficial in the long run. Dont you want your beloved RV to keep running for a long time?

What Does It Cost To Buy A Sailboat

There are a couple of important factors that determine how much money you end up spending.

  • Size – length determines mooring costs, insurance, amount of paint on your hull, literally everything gets more expensive with every foot of length
  • New vs. used – of course, it makes all the difference whether you buy new or used. Typically, the price of a 25-year old used sailboat vs. a comparable new one is 3-4 times lower .
You can actually sail a large sailboat alone

But what’s the largest boat one person can operate? Hint: it’s bigger than you’d expect).Read all about the largest one-person sailboat

With used sailboats, I find that the price generally increases rapidly from 30 feet onwards

It’s the same with new sailboats – or actually, it keeps increasing with every extra couple of feet. The reason is that as the boat gets bigger, it also gets more luxurious .

The average price of a new sailboat per foot in USD:

  • under 30 ft: $2,500 per ft
  • 30 – 50 ft: $2,800 – $4,700 per ft
  • over 50 ft: $11,000 – $50,000 per ft

On average, second-hand sailboats go at 1/3 – 1/4 of the cost of a new boat:

  • under 30 ft: $735 per ft
  • 30 – 50 ft: $800 – $1,350 per ft
  • over 50 ft: $3,200 – $14,300 per ft

If this is too much for you, you could always rent a boat instead. I recommend chartering. You can get great sailboats at great prices. Check out my charter recommendation here.

Why You Should Have Your Boat Detailed

How To Detail A Boat: Marine Gel Coat (How To Correct, Reflect, Maintain A Boats Finish)

Boats are exposed to sunlight. Simply put, UV exposure will cause your boat’s finish, primarily the gelcoat found on fiberglass hulls, to fade and become chalky. This process known as oxidation occurs gradually at first but will eventually degrade a hull and make colored hulls appear whitish. Structurally a fiberglass hull may still be quite sound despite its outward appearance. That said, most boat owners enjoy keeping their boat looking nice and a well maintained boat will command a higher price should you decide to sell it.

The process of detailing your boat will remove oxidation and apply a protective coating that will keep your boat looking great for years to come. Hopefully these future boat owners, shopping at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, know that buying a boat is only the first step in financially planning for your future afloat.

Extreme Low Budget Catalina 22′

Ok, I’m very interested in how cheap you could actually go . Is it do-able to buy a very cheap sailboat and just keep her afloat, never change sails, and only pay for maintenance that is absolutely necessary to not sink?

In this scenario, I don’t care about speed, so I don’t change sails. I certainly won’t join a sailing club, and I try to save some money on the marina by boondocking. I also happen to live in a cheap state registration and tax-wise.

Docking costs can get out of hand

For an average sailboat, depending on your area and wishes, up to $5,000/year.Read everything about docking costs

I try to pay as little as possible for the boat itself . I don’t save up for rigging and hardware . I try to get an extra 2 years out of my bottom paint and I only do the essential repairs, and I do them myself. But because I saved so much on the purchase, this little boat needs a lot of maintenance.

Luckily, I have time on my hands and know my way around engines and rigging, so I do all of it myself .

I don’t bother with winterizing my boat, I’ll just sail somewhere warm. Oh, and I’ll use the engine as little as possible to save on gas.

Will your boat be happy? Definitely not, but your wallet will be . Can it be done? It’s optimistic, but yes, I think it can be done. But you have to be mechanically inclined, and pretty creative.

  • The one-time costs are $2,428
  • Your total recurring costs are $1,380 per year, or $115 per month

Youre likely to incur anywhere from $8 to $40 per square foot depending on your boats interior condition.

In terms of size, the larger the boat, the higher your cleaning cost is likely to be. Based on the cleaning prices mentioned above, a boat interior measuring 200 sq. ft. will cost between $1,600 and $8,000.

One measuring 100 sq. ft. will cost between $800 and $4,000.

Here, its clear that the size of your boat matters in deciding detailing costs. The material used in making your boat seats among other interior parts will also play a role in determining cleaning costs.

Speaking of boat seat materials, some of the most common include stainless steel, marine-grade vinyl, and nylon. All of these require different cleaning approaches.

Certain materials tend to require a more delicate cleaning procedure than others. So, its normal to expected cleaning prices to be higher for more delicate materials.
