We were excited to participate in a short film made by BBC Storyworks on our work at the Center and how it is supported by design. The film is part of the online series “In Pursuit of Wellness”, presented by the Global Wellness Institute and in collaboration with Olson Kundig.

Work Like A Captain Play Like A Pirate At The Center For Wooden Boats

Located on Seattles South Lake Union, The Center for Wooden Boats is a living museum where visitors are encouraged not only to learn, but to experience hands-on the world of boating. Admission is always free.

Here are just a few of the things you can take part in at The Center for Wooden Boats:

Sunday Public Sail: This has been a beloved Seattle tradition for over 25 years ! Volunteers take passengers out onto the water of Lake Union on 45-minute to 1-hour adventures each Sunday. Sign-ups must be made in-person and this is a first-come first-served experience. The number of participants The Center can accommodate varies each Sunday, depending on which boats/volunteers are available. People of all ages are welcome, though dogs and food and drink are not allowed.

Classes and Workshops: The Center for Wooden Boats offers classes and workshops for adults, families, and youth alike. Classes include adult sailing, woodworking, maritime signs, toy boat building, pond boat sailing, and more.

Fieldtrips: This is not your average museum visit! Children are offered a hands-on educational experience. Themes are a choice of What Floats Your Boat?, Tools and Tales, Umiaq Adventure, Native Seattle, The Significance of Salmon and Model Boat Design. One of the favorites is the opportunity to explore Lake Union in an umiaq- a skin on frame boat that is paddled just like a canoe.

Boeing Bridge Deck Yacht Nonchalant

Nonchalant is a stunning 50 Motor Yacht from a by-gone era. Built for William Boeing in 1927. Nonchalant was designed and constructed by the Cold Creek Boatyard in Vancouver, B.C. She was documented in 1930 . LOA 50, beam 11, draft 5, gross 22, net 19. Hull is 5/4 red cedar planks. Decks are Alaska yellow cedar. Power is a single Gray Marine diesel, 64-HN9, in-line six, 225 hp with 250 gallons of fuel tankage. Most recent bottom paint was September 2018. Most recent survey was July 2018. 10 plank on frame tender with launching davit. Covers for house areas. Two heads. Galley with 3 burner LPG with oven. Espar diesel furnace. Classic brass hardware. Ready for turning-heads.

The Center for Wooden Boats frequently accepts boat donations. These boats are sometimes added to our collection of classic wooden boats, but more often they are sold to help us support our hands-on, on-the-water programs for kids of all ages. You can be a part of this tradition by donating or purchasing a boat at CWB!

Boats for sale are stored at our Seattle location, either on the docks or in off-site storage. Boats on our docks may be viewed anytime during CWB open hours. Simply ask for the vessel at our Front Desk to receive the keys. Boats that are located at off-site storage may be viewed by appointment.

The Center For Wooden Boats Is A Living Museum

This is a place where you are encouraged to touch, build, sail, and learn. We offer boats for rent because we believe the experience gained through learning traditional skills, especially on historic boats, is of the utmost importance. Our fleet of rental boats includes classic wooden sail and row boats. Our collection varies throughout the year as we work on boats in our boat shop and add new vessels to our collection.

Youll notice the term livery throughout CWB and in reference to our fleet. A boat livery is in reference to a boathouse on a lake or some body of water that rents out the fleet. So you can think of livery as meaning our rental boats!

We operate on a first-come, first-served walk-up basis in renting all of our sail and human powered water craft. Please come on down to our Livery during our rental hours and our friendly staff will help you get into a boat that works for you!

About The Center For Wooden Boats Activities

There is no admission fee for many CWB activities: you can stroll the docks or beach , enter the buildings, look at the displays, learn from interpretive materials, and take free boat rides on South Lake Union.

Adult volunteers can earn free boat use by volunteering their time at CWB.

Some programs are pay-what-you-can or pay by suggested donation. Other programs, such as boat rentals and workshops, have associated fees.

Youth scholarships are available for every youth program.

Members at The Center for Wooden Boats enjoy significant discounts on boat rentals, CWB classes, purchases at the CWB gift shop, and with participating local merchants. Membership begins at $50 per individual, with discounts for families, seniors, and students.

These boats can hold up to 5 adults and are perfect for rowers of all experiences. Just go through our online reservation system and take one out today!

Our free program books quickly and is available 2-3 weeks in advance. We open a new week of availability every Sunday night. If you do not see any available slots, they are currently full and we kindly suggest you check back as cancellations may occur. In the meantime, feel free to come on down and rent one of our other rowboats, kayaks, canoes, or paddle boards anytime during regular business hours!

Prima Marine Art Show

Were excited to partner with the Pacific Rim Institute of Marine Artists on this show featuring up to 42 pieces of art by 10+ artists.

The PRIMA mission is to celebrate human diversity through the lens of fine art with a specific attention to marine and maritime artists living on or near the Pacific Rim, the Pacific Ocean being our common thread. Several pieces will be for sale.

Built by the Electric Launch Company of Bayonne, NJ in 1913 for what later became the US Coast Guard hull was designed as a double-ended lifeboat for use in heavy surf and has self-righting capabilities vessel was the first motorized lifeboat on San Francisco Bay later converted to a Bridgedeck cruiser powered by a Perkins diesel 130hp in-line 6 hull is double-planked ¾ mahogany planks, frames are oak, decks are canvas over cedar, fasteners are copper clinch nails with washers 200 gallon fuel capacity, 100 gallon water capacity Olympic diesel range 8 cold molded dinghy with launching davit length 36, beam 9 draft 4 propeller 22 x 20 4-blade bronze lots of unique bronze hardware berths, galley, and head set up for cruising last survey November 2018.

The Center for Wooden Boats has two locations: in the heart of Seattle on Lake Union and at Cama Beach State Park on Camano Island, about 65 miles north of Seattle. Each CWB location is a hub of hands-on learning year-round. Get more information about each location in the sections below.

All of CWBs programs and events are designed to provide public benefit. Boat rentals, classes and workshops, field trips, lectures, and opportunities for experience on the docks and in the water are just a few of the things youll find when you visit.

The Antique & Classic Boat Society Inc Is A Membership Organization Dedicated To Connecting People Who Enjoy Classic Boats

Since its founding in 1975 on the shores of Lake George, New York, The Antique and Classic Boat Society, Inc. has grown into the largest society in the world dedicated to the enjoyment of classic boats. We embrace all styles of classic wood, fiberglass and metal boats.

The Center For Wooden Boats

The Center for Wooden Boats has been a beloved gathering place on Seattles Lake Union since 1976. The maritime non-profit’s new building, the stunning Wagner Education Center, raises their visibility and all the great work they do to nurture kids and the local boat-loving community. The new donor recognition and signage system takes its cue from the building’s industrial, honest material palette. When visitors take a closer look at each steel donor panel, they discover the favorite sailing waters of each donor. The space embraces the unfinished steel and wood palette from the architecture and displays screen-printing nautical maps that were added onto raw steel panels. The interpretation was direct-printed onto wood panels and retains an honest and almost hand-made quality. Equipment, displays and tools for boat building occupy almost every wall surface in the building. A new campus map design pulls together the eclectic campus that sprawls across docks and the lakeshore. Staff, visitors and the all-important volunteer operation have loved the increased visibility of the Center for Wooden Boats, the interpretation for the boats and workshops within, and campus-wide activities.

The Center for Wooden boats is East of MOHAI , 1010 valley street. Please gather near the totem pole at the southern entrance to the docks and a crew member will meet you to bring you to the boat.

Center For Wooden Boats On Camano Island At Cama Beach State Park

CWB Cama Beach boat house at Cama Beach State Park is set in a spectacular, 433-acre waterfront location against a forested backdrop. Cama Beach State Park is connected by a mile-long trail to Camano Island State Park, a 134-acre camping park. Both parks are open year-round for day use or overnight stays.

Cama Beach State Park offers 33 cabins for rent to the public year-round. The cabins range from rustic to deluxe to bungalows with fireplaces. In addition, CWB Members enjoy exclusive access to the Boatmans Cabin, a deluxe waterfront cabin that sleeps seven.

Rent boats at Cama Beach by the hour or by the day, including motor boats, sailboats, kayaks, row boats, and canoes. Be sure to call ahead for availability and weather conditions.

Toadstool is a very special schooner. Drawn and built by Bill Garden as his personal yacht. She is a classic design above the waterline and modern below. Yellow cedar on oak. Yanmar diesel. Head with holding tank. See Woodenboat magazine Jan-Feb 2017 page 50. Built in 1975, LOA 29, LWL 23, Beam 9, Draft 5 3, Displacement 6,800 lbs, Ballast 1,500 lbs, Sail Area 555 sq ft. Cama Beach Livery Closed For The Foreseeable Future

Unfortunately, the Boathouse, seawall, and boat ramp sustained structural damage during multiple winter storms. This has significantly impacted the ability to safely operate the Cama Beach Livery for the 2022 season. Washington State Parks is working on fixing the structures, but it is looking unlikely that they will be made in time for summer. While this is a huge disappointment, were going to make the most of the situation. he break in livery will allow Cama to shift attention to much needed building and vessel maintenance. .

The park is still open with cabin rentals available. Cama Beach is a beautiful oasis and still worth the trip this summer.

Center For Wooden Boats Seattle And Camano Island

The Center for Wooden Boats is a non-profit organization that celebrates the rich and varied watercraft heritage that is a vital part of the history of Seattle and the Puget Sound region. At this hands-on maritime museum, the exhibits are on the water and the public is encouraged to use them.

The organization is made up of many different people: local folks, tourists, young people participating in job skills programs, adults and families, and many CWB members and supporters. What they share is a passion or interest for boating, maritime skills, or just a love of the water.

CWB is dedicated to preserving maritime heritage for future generations. The Center preserves and shares both the watercrafts and the time-tested maritime skills of paddling, sailing, and boat handling, as well as boatbuilding and boat maintenance.
