Common boat registration exemptions in Maine are similar to those that are exempt in other states. Knowing which boats are exempt from registration in Maine can help you avoid legal complications and possibly save you money. Some of the boats that not require registration include the following:
- Watercraft with valid out-of-state registration showing a visible number and that will not be used in Maine more than 60 consecutive days
- Military or public watercraft, except vessels used for recreational purposes

Boat Registration In Maine
PRIOR to submitting a registration application, you’ll need to pay excise tax on your boat unless your vessel is:
- A lifeboat or raft carried by another vessel.
- 20 ft or under AND isn’t motorized.
- Exempt from property tax.

What Do I Need To Register My Boat

Begining in 2002 all motorized watercraft on inland water must display a Lake and River Protection Sticker . The cost for these stickers is $10 for residents and is included the registration of their boats. Non-residents will be $20. The money collected will go to educate boaters, train volunteers, inspect boats and trailers, all to help stop spread of invasive plant species from other states.

You may renew boat registration online in Maine in certain counties by signing up with the InforME portal offered by the IFW. If you want to renew your registration by mail, send your fee payment and renewal notice to the address printed on it.

Ifw Atv & Snowmobile Registration
This online service allows you to register your ATV and Snowmobile with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. Following your payment, you will receive a temporary registration form to print for immediate use. Your official registration and stickers will arrive at the shipping address specified within 30 business days.
ATV and snowmobile registrations are valid from July 1st through June 30th. ATV registrations submitted on or before April 30th will expire on June 30th of the current year. ATV registrations submitted on or after May 1st will expire on June 30th of the following year. Snowmobile registrations submitted on or before May 31st will expire on June 30th of the current year. Snowmobile registrations submitted on or after June 1st will expire on June 30th of the following year.
Businesses that wish to renew their ATV or Snowmobile CANNOT use the online system and must renew at the town office.

Canadas Vessel Operation Restriction Regulations jointly administered with some provinces and municipalities set out the restrictions for the operation of small boats on specific bodies of water in Canada, such as speed limits, power limitations, or when and where certain activities, such as waterskiing, are permitted.
When boating in Alberta you must observe a speed limit of 10 km/h within 30 metres of the shore. This limit applies on all waters within these Alberta, except where other limits are posted. These provisions do not apply in rivers less than 100 metres in width, canals and buoyed channels, nor in the case of waterskiing, where the towboat launches and drops off skiers by heading directly away from or into the shore.

You have 60 days from the date of purchase to title your newly purchased boat, vessel, or outboard motor. If you do not title the boat, vessel, or outboard motor, there is a title penalty of $10 on the 61st day after purchase. The penalty increases another $10 for every 30 days you are late with a maximum penalty of $30.

What If Your Trailer Doesnt Have A Title
If your trailers model year is from 1994 or any year prior, you dont need to have a title in order to register it. These older trailers are title-exempt. If your trailers model year is 1995 or after, you will need a valid title to register it in Maine.
